Blanchard Junior Knockabout "JK 20"
Blanchard Junior Knockabout (JK 20)
Actual size - LOA 20', Beam 6.5"
This is the smaller of two "knockabout" classes designed and built by Norm Blanchard at his boat shop on Lake Union in the early 1950's. The Blanchard Senior was built in 24 and 26 ft lengths. The 20' JK uses the same bolt-on steel and lead keel, strut and rudder system designed for Star class racing sail boats. JK's are still sailing on Lake Union at the Center for Wooden Boats (CWB). JK #20 was owned by my family and sailed on Lake Washington from 1961 - 1965.
The model was the product of a half hull modeling class I took at CWB in the falll of 2009.
Model size - 1/16 scale, 3/4" = 1', LOA = 16"
Materials - Hull is multiple lifts of sugar pine with mahogany trim and the keel, strut and rudder are bass wood. Painted to match JK 20 using acrylic paint above the waterline and Benjamin Moore Spanish Red latex below.
The mounting board is cherry painted with multiple coats of shellac.
